Bridgewater Township is located in the county of Somerset, New Jersey. It’s easy to see why NJ home renters choose the township to settle, because it’s centrally located among 14 other municipalities, offering reasonable commute times and access to quality shopping. The environment is lush, due to the historic Raritan River, which acts as a natural border. An abundance of other small rivers and streams have broken off and make their way through the township, offering ample opportunity for incredible views all throughout the township.
Bridgewater gains its name from a town of the same name in the English country of Somerset. Incorporated as one of New Jersey’s 104 original townships in 1798, Bridgewater has a long history of being a great place to live. The township was originally purchased from a local Lenap Native American tribe. This purchase was chartered by the late George II of Great Britain in 1749. Although the history is uncertain, it’s said that the first official flag of the United States was unrolled in the township, on the historical Middlebrook encampment.
Bridgewater was known as a farming town, until there was a population boom that led to more NJ homes. Sometime during the 1970’s the township expanded and the population started to boom. Commuters to the Big Apple find the township a valuable place to live, because it offers the Bridgewater Station, a common stop on the way to New York City. Today, Bridgewater is among the counties most populous municipalities.
